Toy Care Guide

Your new platinum cure silicone toy is a valuable investment in your pleasure and safety.

It's body-safe, phthalate-free, latex-free, and hypoallergenic – and with a little care, it should last you a lifetime.

Here's everything you need to know to care for it.

Cleaning / Sanitizing Your Toy

Clean your toy with mild soap and water after every use.

  • Your toy was cleaned by Desert Island Toys before it was packaged, but we recommend a cleaning before the first use, and after every use.

  • Mild soap and water is all you need. You can use a toy cleaner specifically made for sex toys if you prefer (DreamClean, DivaWash or Dr. Bronners are more natural examples).

  • After rinsing the soap off, ensure your toy has time to fully dry before putting it away.

  • Never use anything abrasive to clean your toy, as this could damage the surface. Your hands or a soft sponge will suffice.

Bleach for a deeper clean

  • Your toy can be soaked in a 10% bleach solution for 2-5 minutes (90% water/10% bleach). Be sure to add the bleach to the water, and not the other way around, to avoid any dangerous bleach splashes. Afterwards be sure to thoroughly rinse your toy and air dry.

The Dishwasher

Another cleaning option is to put your toy in your dishwasher top rack with toys only (no dishes).

  • Run it without dish detergent (which is too harsh for toys). Just water will be enough.
  • Use the hottest cycle your dishwasher has (sanitize cycle if it has it).
  • If the toy is heavy and rests against the dishwasher rack during the cycle, the toy may develop a temporary crease — fully support the toy so that it's not pressing against anything to avoid this.

Dong Soup

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (69)

A time honoured recipe for toy sanitization, boiling your silicone toy easily kills bacteria, viruses, and yeast. Especially useful if the toy is going to be shared with different partners, or used both vaginally and anally.
Prep Time: 1 min
Cook Time:
3-5 min

INGREDIENTS:
  • Some toys in need of a good cleaning
  • Note: Boiling toys made from Near Clear silicone is not recommended (may cause the clearness to yellow)
  • ☠️Never boil bleach. Do not mix this cleaning method and the bleach method above in the same cleaning session.
  1. Wash your toy with soap and water as directed above.
  2. Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil.
  3. Submerge toys in the boiling water for 3-5 minutes. Stir if necessary so that toys are not sitting in the same place on the bottom of the pot for too long.
  4. Remove Safely: Use kitchen tongs to retrieve toys (they're hot), and set on a clean, lint-free towel to air dry completely.

Autoclave?

If you happen to have an autoclave, your Desert Island Toy can be completely sterilized in one.
The previous methods though should be more than sufficient for most people.

Lube

Water-Based Lube is Platinum Cure Silicone's Best Friend!

🥇 In terms of your toy's health, you can't go wrong with water-based lubricants. It's actually safe for all toys and cleans up easily.

🥈 Some oil/grease based lubes are also okay, but they're a lot harder to clean off of the toy afterwards. If you received a squishy with your order, you could test your desired lube on it to see if there is a reaction.

⛔ Do not use silicone based lubes with your Desert Island Toys products. Silicone toys and silicone lubes just don't mix — the toy will absorb some of the lube causing eventual swelling and then chemical breakdown of the toy.

Toy Storage

Do not store your Desert Island Toys in physical contact with other toys.

Sounds weird doesn't it? But the issue is that a lot of sex toys on the market are made of very questionable chemistries. Many toys on the market which claim to be made of silicone are in fact not!

🧪 Some toy chemistries cause adverse reactions when in contact with platinum cure silicone (not immediately, but over time, so don't stress too much about brief contact).

🚩 Some toys (which honestly aren't body safe, and people shouldn't buy) contain oils and plasticizers that keep them soft (think TPE, TPR, Jelly toys, PVC, etc.).

When platinum cure silicone toys are in physical contact with these other toys, the polymers in the softer plastics essentially try to dissolve into or absorb the silicone, leading to:

  • Melting and warping: Softer toys will physically break down, lose their structural shape, and turn gooey.
  • Irreversible fusing: If left in contact long enough (especially in a drawer or bag), the two toys will chemically bond into one ruined, sticky mass.
  • Contamination: The degraded materials can leach toxic plasticizers, trapping bacteria and creating a porous surface that is impossible to safely sanitize.

A few final points:

  • Store your toys out of direct sunlight. Some of the pigments may fade over time (years) when exposed to sunlight.

  • Silicone is not indestructible. Keep your toys away from sharp objects which could tear/cut your toy (sharp fingernails, scissors, teeth, etc.).

  • Before storing your toy away, ensure it is completely dry. It can be stored in the bag it came in, a cotton bag, or a plastic tote — just make sure it was dry first.
